Mississippi Valley Associated Railroaders Within the Carleton Place and Surrounding Area Since 1987
History of MVAR: As of the time of writing, we have members from Carleton Place, Almonte, Kanata, Perth, Innisville, Arnprior, Kemptville, West Carleton, Prospect, Maberly, Constance Bay, Nepean, Stittsville, Ashton, Lombardy and Smiths Falls, and recently 2021 New Brunswick. History: The club began in 1987 with four gentlemen, Bill Brown, David McCurdy (Late), Dale Moulton and Bill Schaubs, getting together Saturday mornings in a booth at the Former Olympia Restaurant in down-town Carleton Place. As word spread of these “Railroad Guys”, more people began to show up. After being denied a private room, the group moved back to Gourmet Restaurant on Hwy. #7 located in the back room. It soon became apparent that a more formal club was needed, so discussions were held on A club name and badge theme. For the club name, we took the name base of a existing Ottawa Club already running since 1961, Ottawa Valley Associated Railroaders (OVAR www.ovar.ca) and changed the first words of the name of the river which flows through the Town of Carleton Place, the Mississippi River. Thus our name: Mississippi Valley Associated Railroaders (MVAR). There was a time when Carleton Place was an important CPR division point, and had a very large engine maintenance facility. A graphic design and colour combination of CPR Maroon and Grey was chosen to honour and recognize the CPR heritage. The badge is displayed on our menu page. In 1992 the group membership was still growing and it was decided that an Executive Committee was required to run the club. With this formalization the club has earn the right to be called a Railroad Club. Although we still operate as a Model Railroad Club currently, in 2021 with a majority vote, we have done away with the Executive Structure. As any club we to have issues which come up, and the consensuses was to have a popup meeting at our Club Nights to raise and vote on a issue. It is also likely that it would be sent out to the membership by email also.
